Host specificity, seasonality and bionomics of Leptinotarsa beetles

  • Chapter
Biology of Chrysomelidae

Part of the book series: Series Entomologica ((SENT,volume 42))

Abstract

Chrysomelidae comprises one of the largest taxonomic group of phytophagous insects. One of the unique features of this family is that the majority of species are foliage feeders with a high degree of host affinity. The strategy of diet specialization, relatively small body size and ability to undergo a complete metamorphosis have undoubtedly contributed to the evolutionary success of this group, as is exemplified by the diversity of species. Chrysomelids provide important biotic resources for experimental analysis of insect/host plant relationships. Host records are known for about 29% of the 35000 described species (See Jolivet this volume).
