Abstract
Since about two decades, protoplasmic streaming in various cell-types has been systematically investigated, for example in plant cells [1,2], in amoebae [3 – 5], see Fig.1, or in nerve axons [6]. Of particular interest are experiments with cytoplasma extracts or fragments, showing the same characteristic motile phenomena as in situ, but on much smaller spatial scales: uniform or circular streaming, migration (also in chemical or other gradients) and oscillatory contractions [7 – 12].
