Antimuscarinic and Ganglion-Blocking Activity of Neuromuscular Blocking Agents

New Neuromuscular Blocking Agents

Part of the book series: Handbook of Experimental Pharmacology ((HEP,volume 79))

Abstract

Among the requirements set by anesthesiologists for new neuromuscular blocking agents, high selectivity of the action on end-plate acetylcholine receptors is one of the most important. Unfortunately, the majority of the known neuromuscular blocking agents, in addition to their main action, may also affect other biologic substrates adapted to the interaction with acetylcholine, such as nicotinic and muscarinic receptors of the autonomic nervous system as well as cholinesterases. Neuromuscular blocking agents with such activity can cause various side effects (changes of hemodynamics, heart rate, etc.).
