Abstract
Besides its contribution to conscious orientation in space, the vestibular system is essentially an apparatus for automatic holding or stabilization of the position of the body and eyes. Correspondingly — and contrary to some other parts of the motor system — vestibularly induced movements are automatic, involuntary, forced movements, independent of voluntary action, dependent only on wakefulness. They include movements like the vestibular nystagmus of the eyes or the tilting reflexes of the limbs.
