Rectal Cancer Surgery

Abstract

Rectal cancer is a major killer. Commonly reported 5-year survival figures for unselected patients irrespective of stage of the disease treatment range around 50%. This is, however relative survival to normal population deaths. If we look at the death rate as a proportion of all patients who present with the disease, the crude 5-year survival drops to around 35% [62, 73].
