The Role of Dietary Fibre in Fish Nutrition

  • Chapter
Recent Advances in Aquaculture

Abstract

Nutritional researchers have successfully identified many nutrients essential to the growth and health of animals and man. However, as each essential dietary component was identified and added to a purified diet, the crude fibre or indigestible organic fraction of the diets became reduced. This is particularly the case for man as a consequence of modern milling methods that remove fibre from natural feed ingredients together with the increasing consumption of refined foods rich in sugar and fat.
