Curcuminoids with Antineurodegenerative Properties: Current Trends and Future Perspectives

Curcumin and Neurodegenerative Diseases

Abstract

Curcuminoids are bioactive compounds found in Curcuma longa Linn. (Zingiberaceae), a species commonly known as turmeric or turmeric root, widely used in traditional medicine for centuries. Recent research has demonstrated the potential of these metabolites as antineurodegenerative agents, substances that can help prevent or treat neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, and multiple sclerosis. Studies have focused on understanding the molecular mechanisms by which curcuminoids exert their antineurodegenerative properties, as well as developing more effective and bioaccessible formulations of these compounds to improve their bioavailability and ability to cross the blood–brain barrier. Additionally, research has explored the combination of curcuminoids with other substances or therapies, such as combining them with other natural compounds, conventional drugs, or non-pharmacological therapies like deep brain stimulation. This chapter aims to provide a literature review focused on the advancements in the use of curcumin in the treatment of neurodegenerative diseases from January 2018 to April 2023. A total of 71 studies were selected, reporting on experiments with curcumin in its free form, with nanocarriers, and combined with other substances to treat various neurodegenerative conditions, primarily Alzheimer’s disease and Parkinson’s disease. The review also includes the use of curcumin analogs and clinical studies. Furthermore, this review contributes to expanding and updating current trends and providing future perspectives on the topic.
