Curcumin and Neurodegenerative Diseases

Abstract

Natural compounds from medicinal plants have been considered useful to treat neurodegenerative diseases (NDs). The search for an alternative medication may be due to the high use of modern technology and the advanced nature of diseases which increases a variety of side effects to the patients. The diseases with a loss of neurons visually both in terms of its functions and structures are characterized as neurodegenerative diseases. NDs are generally initiated by the weakening of proteins, oxidative and inflammatory stress, and environmental effects. Medicinal plants are the major sources of numerous valuable chemicals, which have been used against various diseases including neurological disorders for thousands of years. Use of medicinal plants in such cases has been crucial because of their occurrence through different cellular and molecular mechanisms. Acceleration in inflammatory responses, suppression of the functional aspect of pro-inflammatory cytokines like a tumor, improvement in antioxidative properties is among few neuroprotective mechanisms of traditional plants. Turmeric obtained from Curcuma longa may be helpful in preventing and curing the neurological symptoms including neurodegenerative diseases. There are numerous medicinal plants used to cure different diseases, but this chapter deals with the use and role of turmeric or curcumin obtained from Curcuma longa for its possible application in neurodegenerative diseases.
