Abstract

Industrialization and the faster urbanization lead to the release of hazardous substances in our ecosystem which is affecting our health and the environment. Bioremediation technology utilizes the microorganisms for removing these hazardous chemicals from our ecosystem in an eco-friendly way. Enzymes of microbial origin have proved to be powerful tools for the process of bioremediation. Microbial enzymes showed higher specificity for a broader range of pollutants, higher activity in the presence of inhibitors and higher effectiveness at low pollutant concentration. Process of bioremediation uses recombinant as well as natural microorganisms to degrade the toxic and hazardous substances by aerobic and anaerobic means. Microorganisms availability, contaminants accessibility, and the conducive environment are the factors which governs the success of bioremediation process.
