Abstract

If, after enucleation of a cat eye the ophthalmociliary artery is canulated and perfused with an appropriate medium, the functional state of the retina can be maintained for many hours (Gouras & Hoff, 1970; Niemeyer & Gouras, 1973a). This technique has been published elsewhere (Gouras & Hoff, 1970; Niemeyer, 1973a). The isolated and perfused feline eye has proved to be a preparation eminently suitable for the application of four major investigative techniques: 1. an analysis of the electroretinogram (ERG) under various in vitro conditions (Niemeyer, 1973b; Niemeyer & Gouras, 1973b, Hoff & Gouras, 1973), 2. intracellular recording at various layers of the retina (Niemeyer & Gouras, 1973 a + b; Niemeyer, 1973a), 3. iontophoretic dye injection into single cells (Nelson, v. Lützow-Kafka & Gouras, 1973), and 4. analysis of the fine structure of the in vitro retina (Remé & Niemeyer, 1973). In this particular communication we report the successful use of the in vitro perfused eye as a means of determining some of the perfusion parameters that influence the amplitude of the b-wave of the ERG.
