Abstract
βl–3 glucan, an insoluble polysaccharidic extract isolated from Saccharomyces cerevisiae zymosan, was shown to share the immuno modulatory properties of bacterial vaccines (such as BCG, C.parvum). In contrast to the latter, β–3 glucan preparations are partially purified and biochemically defined, they are not toxic when administered systemically in animals, and the resulting hyperplasia and hyperfunction on the immune system are reversible (Riggi S.J. and Di Luzio, N.R. 1961 — Lejeune F.J. et al., 1978, 1979).
