Gemäß Definition IASP ist Schmerz
ein unangenehmes Sinnes- und Gefühlserlebnis, das mit einer aktuellen oder potentiellen Gewebeschädigung verknüpft ist oder im Sinne einer solchen Bestätigungbeschrieben wird.
Schmerzen sind demnach nicht nur Ausdruck einer Gewebe- oder Organverletzung, sondern mitunter auch Folge seelisch-psychischer Erkrankungen. In der Schmerzbehandlung ist deshalb die Betrachtung des ganzen Menschen eine Conditio sine qua non, sodass vor Einleitung einer medikamentösen oder gar invasiven Behandlung das soziale Umfeld des Patienten, mögliche Lebenskonflikte oder Verhaltungsstörungen durch gezielte psychometrische Untersuchungen analysiert werden sollten.
