Summary
PEG is an effective means of providing alimentation to patients who are unable to swallow and for gastrointestinal decompression in patients with chronic postduodenal obstruction. The procedure (FRENTA® PEG-SET) was performed in 56 patients (oropharyngeal cancer 19 (33.9%), proximal esophageal cancer 7 (12.5%), polytrauma 12 (21.4%), neurologic disorders 8 (14.3%) and postduodenal obstruction 10 (17.9%) with one bleeding complication following needle insertion without sufficient translumination and minor local infections in 8.9%. In cases of obstruction the PEG catheter was replaced 7 days later by an 18 French balloon catheter, pulled through by thread and bougie. Preexistent esophagitis was successfully treated by syringe-administered TAGAGEL® (4×7 ml +3 ml H2O/day).
