Abstract
The classification of all living organisms into distinct species is based mainly on their morphology. The mechanisms involved in morphological expression during onto- and phylogenesis, therefore, have been and still are prime targets of cell biological research. Two, of the many, questions to be asked are of predominant importance: 1. In what cellular substances are the morphogenetic informations stored, and how are they passed on from generation to generation ? 2. By what mechanisms are the morphogenetic informations expressed during ontogenesis ? The first question was answered by geneticists: In general, the program of morphogenesis is being stored in deoxyribonucleic acids of the cell nucleus. The answer to the second question is also well established by now, although certain details are still awaiting further clarification.
