Abstract
Methanol has many uses in industry and automotives, including fuels and antifreeze. Methanol can serve as a denaturant for ethanol, producing “methylated spirit.” This was commonly used during the Prohibition to discourage consumption of bootlegged liquor. More recently, abuse of methanol-containing products through inhalation, such as sniffing glue or carburetor cleaner, has been of clinical concern. Methanol intoxication may also occur after suicidal or accidental ingestion of industrial solvents, antifreeze, or fraudulently altered alcoholic beverages.
