The multidrug resistance phenotype: P-glycoprotein, regulation of the mdr genes and other related mechanisms

  • Chapter
Cell Growth and Oncogenesis

Part of the book series: Molecular and Cell Biology Updates ((MCBU))

Summary

In this article, molecular, genetic, structural and functional aspects related to P-glycoprotein will be reviewed, with a particular concern for the regulation of mdr gene expression. We will point out the role membrane cholesterol may play in the MDR phenotype, briefly review the current ways of modulating this phenotype and discuss present knowledge related to other non-Pgp proteins that can be linked to multiple drug resistance.
