Oncologic Surgical Emergencies

Abstract

Gastric oncologic surgical emergencies typically manifest as perforated or bleeding gastric carcinoma and gastric outlet obstruction. Generally, acute care surgeons should utilize treatment strategies like those for complicated peptic ulcer disease. In this chapter, we briefly review gastric adenocarcinoma, cancer-specific stomach anatomy, and typical presentations of gastric oncologic emergencies. Treatment strategies for perforated and bleeding gastric cancer, including repair, resection, endoscopic therapy, and angioembolization, are reviewed in detail. Finally, this chapter concludes with a discussion on the optimal management of malignant gastric outlet obstruction and palliative care for advanced cases.
