Abstract

Orthopedics was originally a specialty that dealt with “straightening” (ortho) children (ped). It has developed over the last 100 years into a surgical specialty dealing with the musculoskeletal system in people of all ages, so much so that pediatric orthopedics is now its own subspecialty. This section will give an overview of some of the more common systemic orthopedic conditions, not previously discussed, encountered from infancy to adolescence as well as the consequences for those patients who survive to adulthood.
