Abstract
Traumatic brain injury (TBI) represents the leading cause of death among young people in developed countries. The main root cause of the high mortality is attributed to the development of secondary cerebral insults due to hypoxia and hypotension, intracranial bleeding, and cerebral edema resulting from the complex underlying neuroinflammatory pathophysiology of TBI. The present book chapter outlines the current state-of-the-art in the initial assessment and management of polytrauma patients with associated head injuries.
