Abstract

Worldwide population aging leads to increased incidence and prevalence of many chronic diseases including atrial fibrillation (AF). This multifactorial arrhythmia has complex interrelationships with cardiovascular disease and shares with them classical risk factors. Becoming a global epidemic, AF-targeted prevention programs are necessary but largely missing. There is an unmet epidemiological and clinical need to start prevention at early ages and at the population level to prevent AF. The main strategies to address primordial and primary prevention of AF are physical activity and control of weight, blood pressure, and diabetes. We summarize current knowledge in AF epidemiology and discuss disease trends and preventive opportunities offered by managing underlying risk factors and concomitant disorders.
