An Assessment of Possible Factors Contributing to Recalcitrance of Plant Protoplasts

Morphogenesis in Plants

Part of the book series: NATO ASI Series ((NSSA,volume 253))

Abstract

Plant tissue culture techniques, including protoplast technology, have been based on a unique property of plant cells, totipotency. This property enables plant cells to change the order of the developmental expression of their genetic dictionary and instead of expressing genes normally involved in the developmental processes pertinent to the tissue the cells belonged to, they become competent to express genes regulating mitotic activity.
