Abstract
This chapter addresses the psychoactive effects of general medical drugs used in the treatment of children and adolescents with physical illnesses rather than psychotropic drugs prescribed for psychiatric or behavioral indications. “Psychoactive effects” will refer to acute or subacute effects in the behavioral, emotional, or cognitive domain. Anticonvulsant (antiepileptic) drugs are covered in Chapter 12. To avoid wordy repetition, the term “children” will mean “children and adolescents” unless otherwise indicated.
