Pathophysiology of Calcium Absorptive Disorders

  • Chapter
Clinical Disorders of Membrane Transport Processes

Abstract

Calcium is the most abundant cation and fifth most common inorganic element of the human body. It not only serves as the principal component of the skeleton, imparting to it the structural integrity essential to support the increasing body size of the individual during growth, but also plays a vital role in a variety of essential physiological and biochemical processes. Thus, maintenance of circulating Ca2+ within a narrow range is critical for the animal’s survival. The homeostasis of Ca2+ in blood and extracellular fluid represents one of the most exquisite biological control systems in man and is achieved by the interaction of a variety of hormones on the skeleton, kidneys, and intestine. It is evident that the availability of dietary Ca2+ is an important determinant of Ca2+ homeostasis. In this chapter we shall review the normal physiological regulation of Ca2+ absorption in man and the alterations in intestinal Ca2+ absorption which characterize a variety of clinical disorders.
