Abstract
This study analyzes heat and moisture fluxes computed from repeated flight legs 100 m above ground on a 120-km east-west flight track over the pine forest in HAPEX. Sampling problems are first studied in terms of structure functions in order to distinguish between small-scale intermittency of the fine-scale gradients and larger scale global intermittency. The error of flux estimates is then posed in terms of the filter cutoff wavelength, the length of the record or subrecord, and the scale of the surface inhomogeneity. Both the temporal and spatial variation of the flux and other quantities are examined. Finally, the estimated fluxes are compared with results of a simple one-dimensional model of the boundary layer, canopy, and soil.
