This book attempts to introduce the theory of system science and engineering technology into the geographic research of urban-rural transformation, reveals the level-structure-function of urban-rural transformation, and promotes the scientific research on urban-rural transformation. Focusing on the systematic diagnosis of new-type urbanization, urban-rural land use, industrial structure transformation and public facilities allocation, this book explores the long-term mechanism, innovative model, and scientific way of urban-rural land optimal allocation and spatial reconstruction and develops urban-rural transformation geography. In terms of the contents, the book constructs the theory and method system of urban-rural transformation geography, analyzes the process, pattern, mechanism, and response of urban-rural transformation, reveals the evolution characteristics, types, and regional differences of urban-rural regional system, and finally puts forward the optimal decision-making of urban-rural transformation.

About the author

Yansui Liu is a fellow of The World Academy of Sciences (TWAS), professor and Ph.D. supervisor in the Institute of Geographic Sciences and Natural Resources Research, Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), University of CAS. He serves as the director general of Key Laboratory of Regional Sustainable Development Modeling, CAS; the director of Center for Assessment and Research on Targeted Poverty Alleviation, CAS; the chair of International Geographical Union (IGU) Commission on Agricultural Geography and Land Engineering (AGLE); the chair of Alliance of Poverty Reduction and Development (APRD), Alliance of International Science Organizations (ANSO); an associate editor of Land Use Policy, Economic Geography. He is a specialist of human-economic geography and land sciences, and his major areas of research are urban-rural transformation issues, urbanization and rural revitalization, land engineering and land use policy, human-earth system science and sustainable development.

He has been awarded as the Leading Talent of Technological Innovation by Ministry of Natural Resources (MNR) in 2018, TWAS Prize in 2018, Innovation Prize for Targeted Poverty Alleviation in China from the State Council Leading Group Office of Poverty Alleviation and Development in 2018, Prize for promoting science and technology development from CAS in 2016, 2018, and the Second Prize on National Award for Science and Technology in 2019, First Prize on Sciences and Technology Advancement Award from MNR in 2013, 2014, 2019 and 2020, China’s National Excellent Scientist in 2012, etc. He has been in charge of more than 70 projects, including key projects of the National Natural Science Foundation of China and National Key Research and Development Programs, etc. He has published 20 monographs and more than 500 papers, of which over 160 are in SCI/SSCI indexed journals like Nature, Science, Land Use Policy, Applied Geography, etc. He has been selected as one of Global Highly Cited Researchers in 2018, 2019, 2020.
