Microstructure, internal-stress field, and acoustic characteristics of metal in a failed steam-turbine rotor

Abstract

A fragment of a failed steam-turbine rotor is studied by destructive and nondestructive methods so as to understand the factors responsible for its failure and to prevent future recurrences. The structure of the rotor metal is investigated by electron microscopy. A relation is established between the acoustic characteristics and microstructural parameters of the metal.
