Conclusions

The modeling of biomineralization is an innovative approach to controlled materials synthesis. The application of the principle of molecular recognition in the regulation of nucleation and growth is pivotal to a new perspective in the fabrication of advanced inorganic materials. Nanophase and composite materials are immediate candidates for biomimickry. Crystallochemical features such as oriented nucleation, tailored morphologies, uniform particle sizes, and organized assemblies can be generated using organic molecular templates. In this respect, supramolecular host-guest chemistry and recombinant DNA technology may be important aspects of new routes to inorganic materials synthesis.
