Abstract
The results of experimental studies on the kinetics of polymerization of 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate in water and in water–dimethyl sulfoxide and water–dimethylformamide mixtures are summarized. The influence of the polarity of the medium on the molecular weight of the resulting polymers was analyzed. It has been shown that the introduction of additives of organic solvents, which reduce the polarity of the reaction medium, causes a decrease in the rates of chain-propagation reactions, which, together with the reactions of chain transfer to the solvent, leads to a decrease in the molecular weight of polymers.
