Abstract

Epoxidation of bis(2-hydroxyethyl) terephthalate obtained from waste polyethylene terephthalate was carried out using epichlorohydrin. Composition and structure of the synthesized oligomer are established by IR spectroscopy and chemical analysis of functional groups. Differential scanning calorimetry results showed that the curing process of the epoxyamine composition, including the ED-20 epoxy-diane resin and the synthesized oligomer in a 85 : 15 mass ratio, begins at a lower temperature than the composition that includes only ED-20. It was revealed that the enthalpy of the curing process of the modified composition at the initial instant of curing time decreases. The modifier has practically no effect on the viability of the curable compositions and the amount of gel fraction formed in the cured epoxy polymer. The elasticity of the modified polymer increases without changing the strength of the Al–Al adhesive joint.
