Reinforcing silicon carbide fibers with protective glass-ceramic coatings

Abstract

We have fabricated reinforcing silicon carbide (SiC) fibers with xY2O3yAl2O3zSiO2 protective glass-ceramic coatings produced from film-forming organoyttroxanealumoxanesiloxanes. The fibers can be used as reinforcing agents in ceramic composite materials. The glass-ceramic coatings make it possible to improve the thermal stability of SiC fibers in an oxidizing atmosphere at 1600°C. Moreover, the strength of ceramic composites reinforced with glass-ceramic-coated SiC fibers is twice that of ceramic composites reinforced with uncoated SiC fibers.
