Effect of the isotope composition on the energy bands in a semiconductor: Universal relation for monatomic crystals

Abstract

The effect of the isotopic composition of a semiconductor compound on its energy band structure is considered. The role of the changes in the lattice unit-cell volume and of the renormalization of the electron-phonon interaction that are caused by isotopic-composition variations is discussed. A universal relation describing the dependence of the energy bands on isotopic composition and temperature is derived for monatomic crystals in the virtual-crystal approximation.
