Abstract

THE problem of the surprisingly high abundance of galactic helium which has been observed1,2 was the stimulus for this work. This communication proposes a new mechanism for rapid mass ejection from highly evolved stars. The mechanism is effective only over a specific, relatively short period of time in the life of the star. The general problem of mass loss from stars is the subject of an excellent review by Weymann3.
