Surface Tension in Molten Alkali Metal Halides as a Function of the Ion Size

Abstract

Experimental data on the surface tension at the liquid/vapor interface in molten alkali metal halides (AMH) near their melting point are analyzed with allowance made for the difference between the cation and anion size. Attention is focused on the effects of a finite thickness of the interface and the electrical double layer. Experimental data for the entire AMH series may be represented as an “electrocapillary” curve in the coordinates the surface tension vs. the degree of dimensional asymmetry of AMH.
