Radiation-Chemical Behavior of Uranium in Ground Water

Radiochemistry Aims and scope

Abstract

γ-Radiolysis of aqueous solutions of mellitic acids (mellitic, pyromellitic, and trimellitic) simulating natural ground water was studied in the presence and absence of UO2 powder. It was found spectrophotometrically that in the absence of uranium dioxide with increasing irradiation dose the acid concentration decreases. At certain irradiation dose, specific for each mellitic acid, these acids are fully converted to carboxylic and hydroxycarboxylic acids. In the presence of UO2 only the absorption band corresponding to U(VI) appears in the electronic spectrum of the irradiated solution.
