Synchronous Occurrence of Uterine Fibroid with Uterocervical Descent and Gastrointestinal Stromal Tumour: A Case Report

Abstract

Uterine fibroid is the most common benign tumour of uterus, rarely associated with uterocervical descent. Although gastrointestinal stromal tumour (GIST) is most common mesenchymal tumour of GIT, its association with uterine leiomyoma is extremely uncommon. We here describe an unusual case of large intrauterine fibroid with cervical descent and GIST of jejunum. GIST was misdiagnosed as ovarian mass in MRI. However, diagnosis was suspected during exploratory laparotomy and was later confirmed with histopathology and immunohistochemical study. Small bowel segment along with mass resection and duodenojejunostomy along with total hysterectomy and bilateral salpingectomy and Halban’s repair was performed. The main objective is to present a case of simultaneous occurrence of uterine fibroid and GIST as to focus on probability of having synchronous existence of tumours in patients presenting with GIST and/or uterine fibroid. We hope that it will be important for future investigations about the genesis, diagnosis, and treatment of these types of conditions.
