Abstract
Hand, foot and mouth disease is a worldwide spread infection caused by various enteroviruses of group A. It usually begins with signs of a general infection, followed by a typical rash with spots or bumps on the hands, feet and mouth. The virus is mainly transmitted through close personal contact, through aerosols from coughing and feces from an infected person. Most cases require no specific treatment. However, the initial illness is sometimes followed by a number of severe and potentially fatal diseases, e. g. aseptic meningitis, encephalomyelitis and even acute flaccid paralysis similar to paralytic poliomyelitis. Several epidemic outbreaks over the past years have brought this infection into the public spotlight. There are some aspects of major occupational importance in this respect. This article reviews the current knowledge about epidemiology, pathology, diagnostics, therapy and prevention.
