Abstract

The distribution records of Feltiella acarisuga (Vallot) (Diptera: Cecidomyiidae) in Japan were previously based only on the collecting data of Feltiella sp. from Kagoshima in 1971. We identified acarivorous gall midges collected from various localities in Japan as F. acarisuga and found that it is widely distributed in Japan from Hokkaido to Okinawa. A supplementary description to that made by Gagné in 1995 is provided, together with illustrations of the male fifth flagellomere, male genitalia, pupa, and pupal frons. We also provide information on mites on which it preys and ecological traits of F. acarisuga and devote a brief discussion to its use as a biological control agent. We newly confirm that F. acarisuga fed on Acaphylla theavagrans Kadono (Acarina: Eriophyoidea) in addition to tetranychid mites that were recorded earlier. For the convenience of applied entomologists, differences between larvae of F. acarisuga and those of other free-living cecidomyiids that may sometimes be present on the same leaf are briefly explained.

We thank Dr. R.J. Gagné (Plant Science Institute, USDA, retired) and Dr. K.M. Harris (former director of the International Institute of Entomology, UK) for their comments on an early draft. We are grateful to the following persons who provided us with specimens of F. acarisuga and information on prey mites and their host plants: Drs. K. Kakimoto (Kagoshima Pref.), S. Ohno (Okinawa Pref.), R. Omata (Saitama Pref.), Y. Sakamaki (Kagoshima Univ.), and A. Takafuji (Kyoto Univ.,retired), Ms. M. Miya (Tochigi Pref.), Messrs. K. Furukawa (Hokkaido Pref.), K. Taniguchi (Okinawa Pref.), and I. Yamashita (Kochi Pref.). Our thanks are also due to Prof. T. Gotoh (Ibaraki Univ.) for identification of prey mites of F. acarisuga and Mr. K. Matsuo (Kyushu Univ.) for information on parasitoid species attacking F. acarisuga. The drawing of male genitalia (Fig. 2b) was copied from Yukawa (1971) with approval by the editor-in-chief of the Memoirs of the Faculty of Agriculture, Kagoshima University (2009). The drawing of the pupa (Fig. 2c) was copied from Kawano (1969) with approval by the editor-in-chief of the Entomological Society of Japan (2010), to whom we are indebted.
