Abstract
The community of Didactics of Mathematics gains an increasing awareness for the relevance of diverse theories in research and research-based development. Every academic practice in research and development is explicitly or implicitly grounded on basic theoretical assumptions concerning the objects, methodology, aims and norms, and these theoretical assumptions substantially shape the academic practices in research and development. The article offers an orientation for reflecting the complex interplay between theories, academic practices in research and development in Didactics of Mathematics by discussing and comparing different approaches in one exemplary field, namely difficulties with word problems.
