Abstract

The detection of freckles in high-quality alloys is usually regarded as a reason for rejection since they are known to reduce the mechanical properties of the material. The mechanism proposed for the formation of the freckle type found in Nb-containing superalloys (“downward freckles”) is found to permit the formation of spots of segregation. The spots contain an elevated concentration of Nb but not to the extent found in fully-developed freckles. This work presents a study of the spot segregates found in IN718 vacuum-arc remelted material with respect to the micro-structure and mechanical properties. We conclude on the basis of the results that the spot segregates in IN718 do not contain Laves phase and so do not present a deterioration of the mechanical properties which were tested.
