Abstract
Nano-sized silica gels have been synthesized by the refluxing of white sandstone with 2 M NaOH and subsequently undergoing gelation process using 1 M citric acid. The properties of the synthesized materials were studied using TGA, XRD, nitrogen adsorption and desorption analysis, FTIR, and HRTEM. The features of the prepared silica gels have been found to be dependent on: (1) type of silica precursor, (2) presence of microwave irradiation, (3) time of aging process under microwave irradiation. The adsorption of barium, strontium, magnesium and calcium ions by various silica gels synthesized via the sol–gel route was comparatively studied. In general, silica gel nanoparticles that were prepared under microwave irradiation for sodium silicate (sandstone precursor) showed high adsorption activity in comparison to silica gel sample prepared via conventional aging conditions. The affinity of cations for the silica gel nanoparticles was magnesium ≫ calcium ≫ barium > strontium.
