Abstract

A complex of formula [Zn(pobb)2]·2pic, (pobb = 1,3-bis(1-propylbenzimidazol-2-yl)-2-oxapropane, pic = 2,4,6-trinitrophenol), has been synthesized and structurally characterized by elemental analysis, IR, UV–Vis spectral measurements. The crystals crystallize in the monoclinic system, space group C2/c, a = 25.77(2) Å, b = 15.227(13) Å, c = 19.281(17) Å, α = 90°, β = 129.544(7)°, γ = 90°, Z = 4. The coordination environment around zinc(II) atom can be described as a distorted octahedral geometry. The interactions of the ligand pobb and the zinc(II) complex with calf thymus DNA (CT-DNA) are investigated by using electronic absorption titration, ethidium bromide-DNA displacement experiments and viscosity measurements. The experimental evidence indicated the pobb and the zinc(II) complex interact with CT-DNA through intercalation.

Graphical Abstract

A new symmetrical bis-benzimidazole zinc(II) complex was synthesized and characterized, and the results from DNA binding properties confirm the ligand pobb and the zinc(II) complex bind to DNA in an intercalation mode.
