Compositional changes in As-S glass-forming melts during vacuum distillation

  • Published:
Inorganic Materials Aims and scope

Abstract

The closed-system distillation of As-S melts containing 37, 38, 39, 40, 41, and 42 at % As was studied at melt temperatures in the range 743–793 K and a condenser temperature of 573 K. The fraction of the evaporated melt was 2 to 30%. The distillate composition (arsenic content) was determined by iodometric titration. The results indicate that, at As contents from 38 to 42 at %, the distillate is enriched in arsenic, while the stillage residue is arsenic-deficient. The fractionation of the melt macrocomponents during vacuum distillation seems to be due to the complex molecular composition of the vapor phase and the significant difference in condensation rate between the major vapor species.
