Predictive Assessment of the Effective Dose of Irradiation of the Rural Population with Constant Radioactive Emissions from Nuclear Power Plants

  • Published:
Atomic Energy Aims and scope

Calculations prognosticative of the content of radionuclides in the surface air layer, the surface layer of soil, meadow grasses, milk, meat, and vegetables were performed with constant radioactive emissions from nuclear power plants, normalized to 1 GW of power. It was found that the volumetric activity in the surface air layer will not exceed tenths of Bq/m3 for radioactive isotopes of noble gases and tenths of μBq/m3 for radioactive isotopes of iodine and cesium. The content of radioisotopes of iodine and cesium in food products will not exceed only a few mBq/kg. A conservative estimate was made of the effective dose to the adult rural population at the compass bearing with maximum deposition of radionuclides. It was established that at a distance of 1 km from the emission source the effective dose will not exceed 1.6 nSv/day; this is more than 100 times less than the permissible dose when the population is exposed to gas-aerosol emissions from nuclear power plants.
