Abstract

Microwave irradiation has been intensively studied for environmental remediation, e.g., for wastewater treatment, and for synthesis, to take advantages of the rapid heating at the molecular level and of the formation of hot spots on the surface of microwave absorbing materials. Microwave irradiation has successfully assisted catalytic oxidation to remove pollutants rapidly. Here, we review microwave applications with emphasis on synthesis and catalytic oxidation. Methods include microwave irradiation alone, microwave with catalysts, microwave-Fenton, microwave-peralcohol, microwave-photochemistry, microwave-electrochemistry and microwave-sonochemistry. Engineering for upscaling microwave irradiation is also presented.
