Abstract
A prerequisite for the evaluation of the content of digital photographs is that the photo itself is authentic and has not been tampered with. The forensic analysis of photographs to establish whether a concealed but deliberate manipulation has taken place is based either on procedures that statistically evaluate pixels and color spaces or on morphological, biometrical and geometrical comparisons in which, for example, conspicuous repetitions of certain image portions, inconsistencies in perspective, incongruous directional lighting or unexpected shadows are looked for. This paper presents methods and procedures that can help in differentiating between authentic photographs which have not been tampered with and forgeries, i.e. photographs which have been subject to manipulation. As the authenticity and integrity of photographic material is also of importance in a forensic context, users should make every effort to ensure the authenticity of digital images and the resolve to further develop the necessary technologies should be strengthened.
