Abstract
Preliminary experiments have revealed that the addition of bentonite to a coal-pyrite slurry in water of controlled pH (usually equal to the PZC of coal) selectively accelerates the sedimentation rate of pyrite. Electrokinetic flocculation between the positively charged pyrite particles and the negatively charged bentonite particles appears to be the dominant mechanism for this phenomenon. Although all coals possess varying surface chemistry effects, the process appears to hold potential for the economical removal of pyritic sulfur from a variety of coals. ■
