Abstract
Summary
The controversy between Kohut and Kernberg has been one of the most important issues of psychoanalytical theory building in the past decades. This paper proposes a reconciliation. The separation–individuation process described by Mahler serves as the conceptual point of departure. Separation and individuation are considered to be two separate but interrelated developmental tasks which lead to emotional object constancy on account of separation and to identity formation on account of individuation. The proposition is that Kernberg has focused on the task of separation and Kohut on the task of individuation. The therapeutic attitude and techniques that are propagated by them are considered to be supplementary, just like the processes they focus on.
