Summary

Enterocele is an intra-pelvic hernia with an ileal content. It is mainly (but not exclusively) encountered in patients with a history of pelvic surgery (hysterectomy). Patients with enterocele frequently complain of pelvic heaviness and vaginal or rectal procidence. Dyschesia and constipation, however, are probably not related to enterocele. The clinical examination often underestimates the occurrence of enterocele, and thus its diagnosis relies upon a radiological exploration such as defecography.
