Conclusions
To be involved in a couple’s struggle to reproduce is a privilege and responsibility with few rewards and many disappointments. Today the clinician is only one member of a fertility team where nurses, clerical staff, behavioural scientists, technicians and the couple themselves are coming to play an increasingly vital role in investigation and treatment. Although this team approach is essential for efficiency, patients actually come to see the ‘doctor’ who should therefore assume leadership of the team in all clinic activities. However only those prepared to see that the clinic objectives and their achievement are maintained at the highest levels, have the right to assume the role of the clinician in the fertility clinic.
