Summary
Contraction of group representations is shown to be the mathematical structure which controls the spontaneous breakdown of symmetry. The Haag expansion among the generators of the invariance groupG of the Lagrangian and the ones of the contracted symmetry groupG in for the asymptotic fields is obtained and compared with results of functional methods. Various applications of the general derivation are explicitly studied. Observable consequences of the contraction of representations as low-energy theorems are finally discussed.
